"I didn't know what to say," Jill Armstrong told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner last December, after she and her husband Walt were named North Pole's King and Queen for 2026. She said she was "literally speechless." Jill is known for years of 4-H and youth work, including helping at the Tanana Valley State Fair. Walt retired from the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District after working as a teacher, coach, and athletic director, and for years he has led the local FFA program along with youth wrestling and 4-H.
Outside Alaska, the town's name means Santa. Inside town, the holiday season that ends with that crowning is mostly the work of local institutions: a middle school, a Catholic parish, the high school, the North Pole Community Chamber of Commerce, and the North Pole Lions Club. The schedule actually works against the tourist calendar. The attractions built for visitors start scaling back in early October, and that same week the hometown events start.
The Tourist Side Scaled Back on October 5
Silver Bell Square switched to its fall and winter schedule on October 5. From now through December 31, only Destination North Pole and the park are listed as open, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with closures on Thanksgiving and December 25 through 27. The dining, mini-golf, and reindeer attractions are summer-only.
Santa Claus House stays open longer. Here are its posted hours for when relatives fly in and want the classic photo:
- Store hours: daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., September 14 through December 31
- Closed: Thanksgiving, November 26, and December 25, 26, and 27
- Santa's schedule: Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., through November 8, then daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., November 9 through December 31
- One exception: on October 14, Santa is in from noon to 6 p.m.
So guests visiting in late October can still get a Santa photo, as long as it isn't a Monday or Tuesday. The reindeer and mini-golf they remember from a summer visit will be closed.
Three Bazaars Before Winterfest
Explore Fairbanks published its 2026 bazaar roundup on September 24. Most of the borough's markets are in Fairbanks, at the Carlson Center, Bentley Mall, and the Centennial Center. The North Pole events on that list, plus Winterfest, look like this:
| Date | Event | Hours | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sat, Oct 10 | Frost & Fall NPMS Bazaar | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. | North Pole Middle School, 300 E. 8th Ave. |
| Sat, Nov 7 | St. Nicholas Holiday Bazaar | 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. | St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 707 St. Nicholas Dr. |
| Sat, Nov 21 | North Pole High School Christmas Bazaar | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. | North Pole High School, 601 NPHS Blvd. |
| Sat, Dec 5 | Winterfest Bazaar | 10 a.m., closing time varies by source | North Pole Plaza Mall, 301 N. Santa Claus Ln. |
None of these needs a drive to town. The first one is this Saturday. The St. Nicholas bazaar has the earliest start of the season at 9 a.m. and wraps up by 3 p.m., so a midafternoon arrival will miss it. On November 21, the high school bazaar overlaps with three Fairbanks events on the same day: the Ryan Middle School Holiday Bazaar, the Fall Bazaar at Bentley Mall, and the Northern Light Winter Market at the Centennial Center. If you want to hit more than one that day, the North Pole bazaar is the closest stop.
Explore Fairbanks notes that all dates, times, and locations can change without notice. That warning matters most for the last row of the table.
Winterfest's Date Depends on Which Listing You Read
The Explore Fairbanks roundup puts the Winterfest Bazaar on Saturday, December 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with fireworks at 6 p.m. The Last Frontier Events listing for "Winterfest 2026" says something different: a holiday bazaar Saturday, December 5, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., fireworks that evening, and a Christmas celebration Sunday, December 6.
The organizer's own page supports the earlier date. The North Pole Community Chamber of Commerce collects vendor booth fees through Zeffy, and its payment page lists the Winter Fest Bazaar on December 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 301 N. Santa Claus Lane. That page doesn't print a year, but it lines up with the Winterfest 2026 listing. The same page shows a large booth for Chamber members, 10 feet by 10 feet, at $100. Between the vendor page and the 2026 listing, December 5 is the date with the most support. The closing time is still unclear: the event listing says 6 p.m. and the vendor page says 5 p.m. If you're going to shop rather than wait for the fireworks, plan to be done by 5.
The weekend itself has a long history. A 2014 News-Miner story called that year's event the 43rd annual Winterfest and described a weekend with a bazaar, fireworks, a tree lighting, and candle vigils. North Pole City Council minutes from November 2016 describe the Chamber-organized event as a bazaar followed by a candle-lighting ceremony at the high school and call it a local tradition.
The Fireworks Are Shipped In by the Lions Club
The 2026 listing promotes the 6 p.m. show as "Fireworks Above Hotel North Pole," sponsored by Gorilla Fireworks and the North Pole Lions Club. The Lions handle more than sponsorship. The North Pole Lions Club says it coordinates the Winterfest fireworks with the Chamber's bazaar, including arranging the shipment, and it places launch operations behind the Safeway parking lot by the car wash.
The two descriptions fit together. The fireworks go up from the lot behind Safeway, and the sky over Hotel North Pole is where people watch them. In early December, 6 p.m. is well after dark in the Interior, so there's no wait for the sky to dim. The bazaar at North Pole Plaza Mall is close enough that shoppers can head straight outside as the show starts.
A Crown Chosen by Past Kings and Queens
Sunday, December 6, at 2 p.m., the Christmas Celebration fills the North Pole High School Auditorium. The listing promises local musicians, students, and singers, a reading of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and the North Pole King & Queen Coronation, which it calls "a cherished community tradition since 1977."
Last December, Howard Rixie of the North Pole Chamber of Commerce explained how the royalty are chosen:
"The Queen and King are ambassadors for our North Pole community. Nominations are gathered from the community, and final selection is from the past queens and kings."
Anyone in town can make a nomination, and the final choice belongs to people who have already served. The News-Miner describes the position as an honorary role in which the couple represents and promotes North Pole all year. Tefonie and Phillip Wyman held the title through 2025 and passed it to the Armstrongs. Phillip Wyman was crowned at the December 15, 2024 celebration.
This shows how the town's holidays work. The volunteer résumés that earned the Armstrongs the crown, 4-H, the state fair, FFA, wrestling, and coaching, are the same kind of community work that runs the bazaars at the middle school and high school. At last year's ceremony, Mayor Larry Terch put it in his own words:
"As North Poleans, we look out for our neighbors, we care about our community, and we are involved."
He also said the spirit of Christmas has driven the community since 1950.
Putting the Weekends on the Calendar
- Saturday, October 10: Frost & Fall NPMS Bazaar, 300 E. 8th Ave.
- Saturday, November 7: St. Nicholas Holiday Bazaar, done by 3 p.m.
- Saturday, November 21: North Pole High School Christmas Bazaar, 601 NPHS Blvd.
- Saturday, December 5: Winterfest Bazaar at North Pole Plaza Mall, fireworks at 6 p.m.
- Sunday, December 6: Christmas Celebration and coronation, NPHS Auditorium, 2 p.m.
The Winterfest weekend is the one date worth checking with the Chamber as December gets closer, since Explore Fairbanks still lists December 12. If the Chamber's December 5 date holds, the Armstrongs' year as King and Queen ends at 2 p.m. on December 6, when the next couple is crowned.
